In 2011 I found myself in a running gun battle with a violent escapee that had been on a 3day multi state crime spree. I was forced to shoot through barriers to stop the threat and at the time I was carrying tactical application rounds in my AR. The threat was stopped but with very inadequate results taking multiple rounds. I immediately began searching for a better AR round. Friends I had worked with in Iraq turned me onto Black Hills 5.56 77gr OTM. After some testing, I began carrying the BH 5.56 77gr in my duty rifles. Little did I know I would be involved in 2 more shootings in the next 15 months. 4 months later I drove into an ambush 5 minutes after going to work. As I passed by a vehicle parked in a ditch, a male emerged from the front of it with a pump action shotgun. I was under 15yds from him as he lowered and shot. After swerving off the road, I could see that he was back in his vehicle fleeing. I began to pursue and could see him loading his shotgun. I could see my partner approaching ahead of us and watched the bad guy stick the shotgun muzzle out the driver side window. I knew he was going to kill my partner, I decided to perform a TVI/PIT on his vehicle. Once his vehicle came to a stop, he exited with his shotgun and ran to the rear of his vehicle. I had already exited my unit with an AR. He then lowered his shotgun and began advancing on me. As he began to move with his shotgun lowered, I fired my AR. The rounds traveled through his front windshield, rear glass, then to target stopping the threat. The BHA 5.56 77gr stayed intact saving my partners life and mine. Regardless Civ or LE, if you’re forced to protect your family or your partners, the priority is to stop the threat and stop it QUICKLY! Black Hills Lifer…
My working relationship with Black Hills goes back to the mid 1990s, when I was tasked with development of a 5.56mm Match Cartridge for use by the U.S. Navy Shooting Team in an effort to provide a round that would enable navy marksmen to compete more competitively against the other service’s shooting teams at inter-service and national match levels. The round developed was the AA53, 5.56MM Special Ball Long Range, the forefather of the most prolific short/medium range sniping round fielded for use by U.S. SOCOM snipers and the MK262 MOD 1. From our first meeting and working through the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) manufacturing approval process for first 200K round contract, the development of the MK262 MOD 1, and other specialty rounds, Jeff and Kristi have always put a 120% effort into supporting the American war-fighters with the highest quality ammunition. Black Hills strives to manufacture all their munitions to ensure round-to-round, lot-to-lot accuracy, and consistency. Their current manufacturing facility was designed to meet all local, state and federal safety and security regulations making it one of the only ammunition manufacturing facilities manufacturing ammunition for the DOD without waivers.
